Device Project

This project is in it's very early stages right now. It currently serves as a pretty nifty little trackbar class useful for controlling variables for stuff like my color burst and chain experiments (see the flash media section). The project will evolve over time into what I hope will eventually be a useful tool for myself and anyone else who wants to use it.

About the project

As I said above, right now all I have is a trackbar (aka 'slider') that is useful for controlling variables. The goal of the project however is to create something capable of creating custom device structures that you can use to control flash movies, or as a way to remember settings for physical devices you might own (like a mixer, a guitar effect chain, etc..). With the final project one would be able to re-create a device or make one up, assign values to each control with a description of it's use and any other properties it might have, and then save the device. Then with that device you would be able to save and load different settings for each of the controls. If you happen to have a guitar effect pedal with a volume, sustain, and tone control, you could create 3 radial controls that would represent those 3 controls. Once you've created the device, you could change the settings (say 8 volume, 5 sustain, 6 tone, for example) and then save that as "My cool distortion" with a description so that you could look back at it later to remember 'your cool distortion' sound. Of course you probably wouldn't want to waste your time for something that simple, but you get the point.

Technology

For this project I will be using Flash MX 2004 Pro (with ActionScript 2.0) to create the interface and the control classes. Currently I plan on storing the device data using XML, making it easy to use the data in other ways (like displaying it dynamically on a website or incorporating it into other projects). I plan on taking full advantage of the new beefed up Object Oriented capabilities available in ActionScript 2.0, in fact I'm doing this project so that I can become more familiar with it (and I think it will be useful, if I ever finish it).
